To standardize calculations and to provide a basis for presenting the prescriptive requirements, the energy commission established a set of standard climate data for each of the 16 climate zones in california. The california climate zones shown in this map are not the same as what we commonly call climate areas such as desert or alpine climates The climate zones are based on energy use, temperature, weather and other factors. California is divided into 16 distinct climate zones, which range from zone 1 (warmest) to zone 16 (coolest), based on temperature, latitude, elevation, and proximity to the pacific coast The major climate types include mediterranean, desert, alpine, and marine. More information is provided in reference joint appendix ja2 (also included in appendix b of this document), including a listing of climate zones for all california zip codes.
Cec has also developed an interactive climate zone lookup tool that allow user to locate climate zone by address or zip code The lookup tool is located here: From the coastal paradise of the mediterranean climate to the arid expanses of the desert region, california’s climate zones offer a glimpse into the intricate balance of nature and the resilience of ecosystems in the face of changing environmental conditions.
