Aboriginal and torres strait islander students accounted for 6.6% of all students. In 2023 there were 264,395 aboriginal and torres strait islander students enrolled in australian schools, making up 6.5% of the total school population.11 table 2.8 shows the number and proportion of aboriginal and torres strait islander students by school level and state and territory. This number has been on a steady increase since 2006. Enrolments of aboriginal and torres strait islander students in independent schools have grown at an average annual rate of over six per cent per year over the last two decades. Rates were highest in major cities and lowest in very remote areas (figure 1). In 2021, there were 100,609 aboriginal and torres strait islander students in years 7 to 12, making up 5.7% of total students in australia.
