I suspected the armature was heating and then binding somehow On disassembly (unsoldering one lead of the solenoid coil and drilling out the rivets) everything seemed free However, the other end of the solenoid winding was welded to the brass piece that makes contact with the solenoid shell, thus completing the circuit to ground.
