The meaning of hazel is any of a genus (corylus and especially the american c Americana and the european c Avellana) of shrubs or small trees of the birch family bearing nuts enclosed in a leafy involucre. The common hazel is the species most extensively grown for its nuts, followed in importance by the filbert Nuts are also harvested from the other species, but apart from the filbert, none is of significant commercial importance.
