Implemented an enhancement in vpic decoder to allow for the identification of clerical errors in vin decoding output when submitted by the oems With the new process, oems can provide nhtsa with a full list of vins impacted by clerical errors for exempting them from returning a check digit error. All the information on how a vin is assigned by the manufacturer is captured in this catalog and used to decode a vin and extract vehicle information. While the mathematical computations can be completed by hand, the agency recommends that new manufacturers develop a simple spreadsheet program to assist with calculating check digits and thereby reduce vin errors.
