Our department’s research is centered in 4 main areas Astrophysics, atmospheric physics, condensed matter physics, and quantum optics and quantum information. Based on the recommendation of the preliminary ph.d Committee, the full faculty of the department of physics will vote on the student’s admission to ph.d All students must be voted into ph.d Candidacy by the start of their 4th year in the program.
A minimum of 30 credits is required for either option The department of physics offers graduate programs leading to the ms and phd degrees in physics The department is located in the 78,000 sq Physics building (built in 1999), which contains numerous research and teaching labs, offices, classrooms, a machine shop, and a physics library. Recent umbc physics graduates have received phd degrees at mit, harvard, princeton, stanford, the johns hopkins university and the universities of california at berkeley, illinois and michigan, among others.
