The opening song even says it's family first and family last and family by and by, so i know that the writers must have known who the addams are supposed to be, but they engaged with it in a traditional storytelling manner that disrespects the addams family. The point of the addams family has always been to challenge people’s perceptions and judgements — the outsiders are scared of the family because of the spookiness and macabre habits and interests.
